Cybersecurity Competition

Saturday, April 20th, 2013 | General with 1 Comment

fixpc Oh My Damn once this competition was over with. It lasted an 8 grueling hours. There were 6 of us on the team. There were 3 Windows 2003 Servers, 2 linux boxes, and 2 clients. We had to keep up a DNS server, exchange server, FTP server, Secure POP, POP, SMTP, web server, and SNMP. We were the blue team. We were defending our services from the red team which was the hacking team. We had 15 minutes, yes you read that right 15 MINUTES to get our systems ready to be hacked. It just is not feasible lol

15 minutes FLEW by. I really don’t think we even got 15 minutes you ask any of us. We SORT of had directions regarding the machines as we were the team hired to fix the machines after they fired the entire last IT team. We had the passwords for the windows boxes and I quickly got the clients firewalled, antivirused, and malwared up. My choice for firewall was Vipre but I couldn’t get the damn thing to let me bypass the registration. Come to find out if I had used my school email right off the get go I’d have had it but the clients were negligible as they didn’t really count towards the scoring engine.

We had Comodo on a couple servers but the hackers were getting through. We had to find a way to get Vipre and one of the other team mates figured it out so we started loading it on all the machines. In the meantime, the linux people were freaking out because there were no passwords for those machines in the directions. 20 minutes later someone rolled by and said check under the printer. We were like WTF? Sure as shit there was a password list there and they went to town and quickly discovered how messed up their machines were lol All the machines were essentially messed up. That was the point. We had to fix them to get them to run properly without being hacked. I had to repair one of the servers and the linux guys just reinstalled with a different version of linux because they couldn’t even get the packages to uninstall due to the corruption.

It was fun watching the red team trying to come through on the windows machines as we had Vipre running and found their subnet and blocked it. We were like, okay that’s done now to set up all the services which we did and we’re looking at the board which had green for up and red for down. Everything was red. We were like WTF? Nothing we did changed that. After all was said and done we found out that when we blocked the hackers entire subnet we also blocked the scoring engine which happened to be on the same subnet. We weren’t told that in the meeting we had. We were pissed needless to say. Did I also mention we only had 1 month to prepare because we got invited that late into the planning?

At the very end everybody gave their little synopsis of how you did and what went right or wrong. We immediately brought up the fact that all the computers we used were laptops but there were no effin mice!

The red teams presentation was entertaining to say the least. There were webcams on the laptops. We used our badges to cover the cameras. We weren’t sure if they were getting access to that or not but we didn’t want them to see us. We also didn’t want them to hear us and uninstalled the audio drivers. That kept popping up on the server I was working to install and I kept hitting cancel so I knew they had access at one point to my machine (this was before Vipre).

Anyway, the red team had snapshots of other team members from the webcam. Screen shots of some of their laptop screens on what they were working on as well as other screens shots after they loaded a text file onto their machine, and not to mention them changing some of the machines wallpapers lol. NONE of that happened on our machines. We did see they tried to inflict some viruses and trojans at one point and Vipre shot that all to hell. We laughed. We also put up our own notepad which said “HIPS ….. suck don’t they” just in case they could get a snap shot of our screen.

Overall, it was fun and a very good learning experience, not to mention a great thing to place on your resume. We are invited back next year and I’ll be damned if I don’t register for at least once class next spring just so I can go back into it and get all the green lights for our team. The only draw back was that we could not try to hack the red team since we knew what their IP address was lol. I’m not sure if any of the other teams figured it out but we did.

Time Crunch

clocksStarting next week should be interesting. I have 4 weeks of classes left with 3 weeks of my internship which is 10 hours per week. Now I’m working 10 hrs a week at the hospital and 3 hours doing the books for a small construction company. I start working at the college I’m currently going at for 20 hours per week next week so things are going to have to be juggled around for 3 of those weeks.

I also have a cybersecurity competition in 2 weeks which is an all day thing. We are defending our systems from hackers. Personally I’d like to be the one hacking but it isn’t meant to be that way. Hopefully we all will end up connecting with one of the many companies that is sponsoring it and find a full time job. I’m definitely going to be bringing copies of my resume just in case.

1. What are your plans for Easter? Are you cooking a big lunch or dinner? Dyeing eggs? Attending a sun rise service? Eating too much chocolate?
I just found out that the new GI Joe movie comes out this weekend so that’s what I will be doing.

2. What is something you feel too young to do?
Going to the bar scene anymore. I just do not have the stamina to be out all night partying it up.

3. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud…it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs…”

Of the characteristics mentioned in the biblical definition of love which do you find most difficult to live out and why?
I’ll admit I’ve been envious at times but you just gotta get over it all, no?

4. What’s a springtime flower you associate with your childhood?
Wysteria oddly enough. My mother managed to get them to grow as a bush even though they are a vine and the smell from the flowers are magnificent.

5. Ever sung karaoke? If so, what’s your go-to song? If not and you’re given the opportunity, would you?
I do not sing karaoke and no amount of liqueur will make me lol

6. What is something you keep in a basket?
My feelings and emotions. I’m not a very sharing person especially when it come to what I feel. Literally in a basket I have some potpourri in the bathrooms. One basket in the office has a couple TV remotes and the potpourri bottle of vanilla oil I use to refresh the smell in the potpourri baskets.

7. When was the last time you felt foolish?
I have no idea but the next time isn’t far away I can tell you that.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Where does the day go sometimes? I finally got to sit down around 7 PM tonight.

obamatwitter Yes I follow what nonsense comes out of the White House on twitter. If they are going to use it I’m going to follow it.

This one tweet just rubs me the wrong way on soooo many different levels though. It is required, by I believe 2015, every last person in this country, who is legal mind you, have health insurance. Whether this be through the company you work for or just on your own. Yes, going to the doctor, surgeries, and medicines are expensive. Having health insurance helps this so you can avoid going broke.

What really pisses me off is the fact that, depending on where you work or IF you work, you may not have the money to pay for health insurance every month. Requiring people to purchase insurance or pay a fine if you do not is absurd. I’m sure every person would love to have health insurance but they just CANNOT afford it and to give them a fine because they cannot ….

1. March 20th is the first day of spring…is she a lion or a lamb in your part of the world?
I think it’s a penguin. It’s C O L D. I’m just hoping it warms up fast like the weekend before last when we had almost 90 degrees.

2. What’s the most dreaded task on your spring clean to-do list? Do you have a ‘plan of attack’?
I never had a plan of attack. Once I’m able to open the windows and not get a ton of pollen blowing in I do that to air the place out from winter.

3. Peas…love ’em or hate ’em? What’s a favorite dish you make using peas?
Love em. Just give me a bowl of peas and some butter I’m golden.

4. Do you feel under appreciated?
Maybe sometimes but that comes with every job doesn’t it?

5. Have you been using Google Reader? If so, what are you switching to now that GR has announced retirement? If not, how do you read your favorite blogs?
I’m devastated Google Reader is going away as is the Google Voice Blackberry app. I’ve been trying out a slew of other readers and so far none is even comparable to how Google does their. I’m waiting for The Old Reader to populate my subscription to test that one out as the reviews state that is the closest to Google Reader you can get with the column of blog names on the left like we’re used to.

6. Anne Bradstreet is credited with the following quote~

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”

Agree or Disagree? Why?
I’m half and half on this. I could skip all the seasons and have summer year round. I wouldn’t want to wish misfortune on anyone and yet it still is out there.

7. When did you last ‘spring for something’? What was it?
I went and saw a movie at the dollar theatre even though I really don’t have money to do anything right now.

8. Insert your own random thought here?
Last night I decided to make a big pot of soup because I felt like I was starting to become ill. Still have a scratchy throat and my ears keep popping. I blame my ex coworker who is sick whom I visited last Friday. What do you make when you feel yourself starting to become ill to try to make you feel better?

1. Do you play games of luck/chance for money? Have you ever played bingo for money? Visited a casino? Placed a bet on a horse? Bought a lottery ticket?
Yes, no, yes, no, yes. So, it seems pretty mixed. Have I money I’d be buying lottery tickets galore since the pot is up to $180 million. Just played some poker this past weekend. I almost won. I came in second place. I’d love to go back to Vegas and play blackjack but I can’t guarantee that I’d make it outside the hotel any faster than last time I went. It took me 3 days to step foot outside the hotel due to the gambling I was doing lol.

2. Will you be preparing and/or dining on the traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage meal this St. Patrick’s Day? Mashed-baked-hash browned-french fried…your favorite way to have potatoes?
No corned beef or cabbage. I won’t eat either. However, I’ll have some fries please if you don’t mind.

3. What’s the last thing you felt ‘green with envy’ over?
The pure bliss kids have about everything when they are young.

4. What’s at the end of your rainbow?
Hopefully a new job since I’ve been applying everywhere known to man, even places I’d rather not drive due to the distance.

5. March 12th marks the anniversary of the death of Anne Frank (June 12, 1929-March, 1945). Anne’s diary detailing her time spent hiding from the Nazi’s during the war ranks as one of the best selling books of all time. Besides your blog, do you keep any sort of diary or journal? Was this a habit you developed as a child or is journaling something new for you?
Never kept a journal. I keep saying I will but I don’t and most likely won’t. The blogs enough to keep my thoughts written down as well as Twitter (which by the way you can get physical copies in a booklet now).

6. What’s an item in your home or closet that contains every color of the rainbow?
I have no such thing in my place. Everythings mainly a solid color or two colors.

7. Write a limerick with you as the subject. You can do it!! Just remember this is a family friendly blog…don’t make me get out my wooden spoon.
I have no idea how to do this much less some up with a topic to do this for.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
The pollens already here as well as the flowers. poor plants have no idea what season it is but its aggravating my allergies bad.
